bSa - Project - Certification Coordination

Chair: Deke Smith

Scope:

The scope of this project will cover the entire industry as each association determines their level of need for certification of their members. It is envisioned that a capstome test be administered with individuals selecting any additional areas in which they should be proficient. That way the test can be administered modularily and grow in that same approach over time. A matrix needs to be built to identify which items need to be uder the area of responsibility of each organization.

Description:

Many people are professing ability to produce building information models now. Some of those people are driven by market pressure to remain competitive others are truly competent. This is a problem for prospective owners wishing to hire firms able to generate the usable information they need to sustain their facilities over the life-cycle. Since there is little coordination in the education process now and many people are only trained in how to use a specific product, there is a need to understand the more holistic needs of the industry. There is also a need to ensure that professionals attain a certain common level of competence in their ability to produce building information models.

This problem has been identified by several organizations, specifically CSI, ASHRAE, and AGC and others will no doubt see the same requirement. Therefore, this project will also serve to coordinate the various existing as well as future initiatives. It recognizes that different facets of the industry will need different levels of capability.
